Obituary for William Bert Settle Sr.

William Bert Settle Sr., of Jay, Florida went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 12, 2020. Bert was a devoted husband, father, granddaddy, great-granddaddy, brother, and uncle. Bert is known and admired for his community service and his willingness to help all those in need.
Bert enlisted in the United States Navy serving as a Boiler Technician upon graduating from Jay High School in 1951 and he proudly served his country until 1955. After leaving his duties in the Navy, Bert was employed as a firefighter for 32 years at Whiting Field Naval Air Station in Milton Florida. He served as the fire chief at Whiting until his retirement in 1981. Bert was also an electrician and he loved working with wood. His love for wood working and for helping others was evident in the countless hours he spent working alongside his church family in building scores of decks and wheelchair ramps in Jay and the surrounding areas.
Bert is preceded in death by his parents, Forrest and Ruth Settle of Jay, his brothers Forest Settle, Bruce Settle, and Jim Settle all of Jay. Bert’s half-brother Leroy Settle and his half-sister Ann Gant also preceded him in death. Bert’s greatest loss was the passing of his son Raymond Settle.
Bert is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years Alma Polk Settle; his sister Ester Nutt (Charles) of Prattville, AL; his son Bert (Crock) Settle, Jr. (Peggy); daughter in-law Sherry Settle of Fayette, AL; his grandchildren: Preston Settle (Mallorie), Cammie Settle, Trey Settle, Wesley Settle, Ally Settle, DeAnn Taylor (Jeff), Kendell Teague (Andrew), and Presley Melton; his great grandchildren: Morgan Taylor (Selina), Ashton Taylor, Forrest and William “Liam” Settle, and Hamilton and Ellis Teague; and the mother of his grandchildren Donna Bullock. Bert is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and countless people who called him, “Uncle Bert”.
A service to celebrate Bert’s life will be Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at Jay First Baptist Church. The visitation will be from 12 noon until the funeral begins at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. George Fredericks and Chip Fox officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
