Eugene George Fillingim, Sr.

Eugene George Fillingim, Sr., 76, of Pensacola, passed away on November 5, 2019, in Covenant Care Hospice at Sacred Heart Hospital. Gene was born in Pensacola to Elmer and Regina Fillingim on April 22, 1943. He grew up in the Pleasant Grove area and enjoyed spending time on the water fishing and skiing. He graduated from Escambia High School in 1961, and Mississippi College in 1965. He served in the United States Air Force from 1966-1971, in the area of telecommunications. He was employed by Gulf Power and later Motorola, Inc. He spent many hours over the years communicating over ham radio (amateur radio), call sign WA4IZM. He met other amateur radio operators on Halo Net and provided communications (phone patches) between missionaries around the world and stateside family members. He grew up at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where he accepted Jesus as his Savior and was baptized. He was later a member at Warrington Baptist Church where he served in the media ministry producing the weekly radio program.
Eugene is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Regina Fillingim; and brother-in-law John Glover.
He is survived by his children, Virginia Fillingim, Eugene Fillingim, Jr., Gina Whittington (Jimmy); the mother of his children, Glenda Fillingim; grandson, Hanc Whittington; brother, Larry Fillingim (Ann) and sister, Tanna Glover; nephews and nieces: John Glover (Alisa), Andrew Fillingim (Madison), Brian Fillingim (Kelli), Matthew Glover (Amanda), Laura Sampson (Eric); and 11 great nephews and nieces.Services will be held Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at Trahan Family Funeral Home. The visitation will begin at 11:00 am, with a service following at 11:30 am. We will leave in procession to Barrancas National Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest with honors at 1:00 pm.
