Marius Antoine Gache
June 28, 1937 –March 6, 2019
Marius Antoine Gache, 81, of Pace passed away March 6, 2019 with loved ones by his side.
Matt was born June 28, 1937 in Passaic NJ, to Joseph Marius and Marie Anne (Gaonach) Gache.
Matt grew up on Kessler Avenue in Lodi, NJ. He played the accordion as he grew up, and that spurred an interest in music. Through his life he played the trumpet, piano and the bag pipes. He played football in high school and graduated in 1955.
Matt went to Colby College in Maine on a football scholarship, playing football and hockey, graduating in 1960. Matt married and had a son James Marius Gache and a daughter Jacqueline Elizabeth Gache, Matt joined the Navy and became a commissioned officer in December of 1960. Matt went to flight school and earned his “Wings of Gold”. He retired 23 years later as a successful pilot and a Vietnam Veteran. Matt retired from his second career as a flight instructor at Whiting Field in Milton FL teaching future military aviators in the newly developed flight simulators.
Matt attended the First United Methodist Church where he met and later married Donna Kay Barze Mullins on December 17, 1988. Matt loved his family and adored his grandchildren who lovingly called him “Grampe”. He relaxed while reading political books and books on Vietnam. He also enjoyed watching the new found news channel “One America Network”. In private moments, Matt would share a dance or two with his wife to songs pulled from their vast music collection. A reason to get the family together also included the occasional fresh fish fry by his son-in-law, Jeff.
Matt was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Kay Barze Gache.
Matt is survived by: his son, James Gache; daughter-in-law, Brenda Gache; his daughter, Jackie Tucker; step-daughter, Michelle Gray; son-in-law, Jeff Gray; two grandchildren, Jameson Gray and Brooklynn Gray; and numerous extended family members.
Respects can be made at Trahan Family Funeral Home of Milton on Saturday March 16, 2019 with visitation starting at 2:00 pm until the memorial service begins at 3:00 pm. Burial will follow at Bayview Memorial Park Cemetery on Scenic Highway in Pensacola.

I was saddened to discover Matt's passing when I attempted to call him today and got the message that his number was no longer in service. I then Googled him and saw the bad news about the passing of this great man. I first met Matt as a Navy flight student going through helicopter simulator training in 1990. He was an outstanding instructor, and set a shining example of what it meant to be a Naval Aviator. During the debrief of our first hop, we discovered that our mothers both came from small villages in Brittany, France located only a few miles apart from each other. What are the chances of that? From that day on we became great friends and shared many stories (Matt was quite the storyteller) of our "Breton" heritage and his time flying with the Seawolves and his other Navy tours of duty. i was so pleased when he and Donna met my Mom and Dad when I received my "Wings of Gold". We had a wonderful evening together and shared stories late into the night. We kept in touch over the years and Matt was always someone whose intelligence and guidance I valued highly. I was so proud that he was able to spend time with my two boys when we evacuated Northeast Florida for Hurricane Matthew and he and Donna opened up their house to us. It was an honor, a privilege, and a blessing to know Matt and his lovely wife Donna. They are together again after a short break. I will miss him and our conversations greatly. My condolences to his family during this difficult time. Warmest regards, John Aguilera

I have been proud to know Matt since our fraternity days at Colby. Truly he was one of the finest people I have been fortunate to know. Please extend my condolences to his family - we are all blessed to have been a part of his life.

Marj and I are very sad that Matty has passed away as he has been a good friend since May, 1967 when we first got to know Matty. Matty was the Officer in Charge of two helicopter detachment on the icebreaker USCGC Westwind heading for the far north Arctic Sea by Greenland. During that six month cruise (The Army calls that deployment) we encountered incredibly bad weather and rough seas. The flying was dangerous and the ice lasted into the late summer and started freezing again before we left the artic in the fall. Matty and I worked together every day and when we got ashore, usually at one of the two Air Force Bases on Greenland, we were together, too. In that situation we got to know each other very well. We received a Coast Guard ribbon for that cruise. Matty was a mentor to me and a great friend. He taught me how to fly off a ship at sea, not always in ideal conditions but to always think safety. He was proud to be an officer in the Navy and to carry on the traditions of the Navy. He treated all sailors with respect and was patient in his orders to them and sensitive in assigning duties. He was a Navy Officer and Gentleman. In 1967 Matty stayed in the Navy and I left the Navy to farm in Minnesota. Though time passed and at times great distances separated us Marjie and I were fortunate to always count on Matty being one of our best friends. When we would call or see each other again it was like we had seen each other last week. We are sad that we will not have Matty to call or visit but are grateful that for a long time we could always count on him as a best friend. We will dearly miss him. Dennis Frederickson
