Doris was born to William Rufus and Annie Mae Lloyd Jones in Jay, Florida, on January 4, 1929. The second of six children, Doris graduated from Jay High School at the age of 16. She then attended Florida State College for Women, graduating from Florida State University with a Bachelor’s of Arts in 1948, and a Master of Arts in 1949, at the age of 19. Doris remains the youngest student to attain a Master’s Degree at Florida State University. Doris married Bill Patrick in May of 1954, and moved to Meriwether County, Georgia, where she taught for four years. She then moved back to Jay, Florida, where she was instrumental in establishing libraries at the Jay, Chumuckla, and Munson schools. Doris continued her career as the Jay High School Librarian from 1948 to 1993. She finished her career as an Adult School Educator, completing 52 years of educational service. She was a long-time member of both the Florida Education Association and the Jay Order of the Eastern Star. Doris took tremendous pride in assisting her students toward completing their education. She was a cherished member of her community. “Darcy” adored and doted on her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her kindness and gentle touch will always be remembered. To know her, truly was to love her.
